Spiritual mimics have been studied for centuries. When we think of a haunting or a haunted presence, we often try to identify who is haunting us. In both waking life and the dreamscape, we may be visited by the departed—whether known or unknown.

But as we traditionally honor ancestors and passed loved ones, evil or troublemaking spirits will often mimic them in order to get close. These malevolent entities know we feel safe in the presence of our beloved dead, and they use that trust to silently gain entry into our lives and cause chaos.

For example, if a departed father—who normally brings messages in dreams—suddenly appears turned away, silent, or distant, it might not be him at all. It may be a mimic.
